How We spent our 30th anniversary underground!
Mammoth Cave is in Kentucky about 90 miles north of Nashville. It is one of the most awesome places on earth.
We wanted to go somewhere cool for our 30th anniversary together (22 married). Mammoth Cave is both literally and figuratively one of the coolest places anywhere. There are 390 miles of mapped cave the ground there, and it is estimated another 600 miles which have yet to be mapped. The cave is 52 degrees all year long.
We went on the historic tour, which is the same tour visitors such as Mark Twain went on over 150 years ago. The writing you see on the walls in some of the photos below is called "smoke writing", and was done with oil lamps. These days we would call it "graffiti." On our tour we walked for over two miles underground! I could write for hours and hours about this place and never come close to being able to describe it to you fully. Below are some pictures, but they don't capture the huge size of the place at all. You just have to go see it
On top of all that, it has some of the best sleazy and cheesy nearby tourist traps It is by far the coolest place I have ever been in the United States.
